Solidify Fundamental Building Blocks of Soccer

Technical Training

As with every sport, the basics are the key to the game. Nothing can happen if you can't dribble, pass and control the ball effectively. I use many Coerver concepts in teaching technical mastery of the ball.

How I Teach Technical Training

  • How I Teach Technical Training

    • First Touch (THE most important technical skill in soccer)

      • Juggle a tennis ball more than 20 times using both feet in a confined space

      • Juggle a mini ball more than 50 times using both feet in a confined space

      • Juggle a regular size soccer ball more than 100 times using both feet in a confined space

        • Maintaining the ball at a height between the waist and chest

        • Maintaining the ball at a height below the knees

        • Alternating between hitting the ball higher than the cross bar, then bringing it back into a controlled juggle

        • Moving the ball from feet to thighs to head. Also including shoulders and all surfaces of the foot (outside, inside & heel)

      • Juggle a regular size soccer ball more than 50 times in a confined space:

        • Right foot only

        • Left foot only

      • Juggle a regular size soccer ball more than 20 times using head only in a confined space

    • Dribbling

      • Coerver Drills (Scissor, Step-Over, Drag Back, Sole-V, Roll, Cruyff, etc.)

      • All Coerver Drills are done emphasizing keeping head up as much as possible to scan the field and determine if the defender “bit” on your move or not. Also to look for the passing, dribbling, shooting option that your move will create. I do this by multi-tasking during the moves by throwing and catching tennis balls.

      • All Coerver Drills will progress from stationary to game speed. This will including movement off the ball prior to getting to the ball and after executing the dribbling skill.

      • Players will have to process verbal commands using color, numerical and alphabetical instructions to determine which cone to go to and which move to execute. (Cognitive training intertwined in technical training)

    • Passing

      • Proper passing technique for short and long passing

      • 1 touch passing

      • 2 touch passing

      • Accurate passing after controlling a ball received from ground, air and bouncing

      • Accurate passing after executing Coerver move

      • Accurate chipping

      • Accurate long driven ball

      • Providing proper texture (spin) on a pass to get the ball to “hold up” and or “spin” in the correct direction to be usable for your teammate receiving the ball

      • Checking shoulder (scanning field) prior to receiving the ball while coming off of game-like movements

      • Passing (on ground, volleys, ½ volleys, thigh trap to volley, chest trap to volley) while executing agility movements (ladders, cones, etc.) while incorporating checking shoulder (scanning the field) in between agility movements and passes

    • Shooting

      • Proper shooting technique for placement and power shots

      • 1 touch shooting (on ground, volleys and ½ volleys)

      • 2 touch shooting (after controlling with foot, thigh and chest)

      • Accurate shooting after executing Coerver move

      • Accurate shooting after movement to create space for the shot
